Trinity (formally categorized as XTNT-001) is a nanotech-based substance that functions most effectively when in close proximity or in contact with biological materials. Extraterrestrial in origin, Trinity relies on the electromagnetic fields specifically given off by living organisms to function (the process by which it does so can only be speculated by current scientific theories and advanced philosophy), and contributes towards performance enhancement and, in some hosts, active electromagnetic manipulation.
On the molecular level, Trinity acts as a binding agent with organic substances to varying degrees, but readily bonds to iron-containing molecules such as the various haemoglobin species that are present in red blood cells. The only colour change that is produced in a solution containing Trinity is a light blue colour in the immediate presence of iron – otherwise, it is colourless as a solute. When bonded to complex bio-molecules such as proteins and nucleotides, Trinity also shows the ability to augment the organism's electromagnetic field.
From a biochemical standpoint, Trinity is capable of extending the life of an organism indefinitely. This is done through the preservation of telomeres on chromosomes, repairing potentially deadly mutations caused by age and radiation, and consuming all invasive threats (i.e.: pathogens, viruses and carcinogens). Interestingly, Trinity allows mutations that allow for its host to better adapt to their surroundings, theoretically enabling the host to continue to evolve biologically after consecutive generations.
Inside an organism, Trinity has the ability to enhance the overall performance of its host by reducing the threshold energy required to perform various tasks, contributing to physical feats that would otherwise be more difficult, if not impossible, although it is currently unknown how it does so. The perceived increase in physical performance is as follows:
Eper = Enormal(1+ln(M(l-1))
Where l is the Kurzweil epoch level1 and M is the mass of an organism in kg. Theoretical physicists have suggested that the answer to this mystery may be connected to a grand unifying theory.
Trinity interprets individual characteristics found through genetics, learned abilities, aptitudes, mental capacity, personality, interests, morals, and aspirations through an unidentified process currently known as psychochemoanalysis – the interpretation of both psychological and physiological traits through the use of chemical terminology. although it is currently unknown how.
However, these benefits have a side-affect: Trinity is flawed in that it overanalyzes the traits that make individuals of the same species unique. By doing so, Trinity forces the host's body to develop bestial features and abilities, ultimately bearing anthropomorphic resemblance to an animal known to the host, regardless of whether it's real or fictitious (so long as it has both a realistic anatomy and realistic physical capabilities). Due to changes in psychological behaviour and mental status over time, this resemblance also changes over time, still retaining at least part of the sentient host's basic anatomical structure.
In some hosts, instances of "specialist" abilities have also been observed. Aside from enhanced physical performance, these hosts exhibit subconscious control over their own electromagnetic fields, enabling them to manipulate elements of their environment in emulation of natural or technological phenomena. As abilities vary between specialists and correspond to both the hosts' theri-sync and their career aspirations, it is yet unknown how this is made possible. At the current moment, operatives and associates of Trinity Task Force 1 have provided no public confirmation that such Trinity hosts exist, but acknowledge that the public is at least aware of the possibility.
Very little is known about Trinity's origins beyond that it is extraterrestrial in origin. In August 2032, twelve Canadian youth were exposed to the substance in a test trial, marking them as the first known hosts in biological history.
Its medical discovery was made by David Brahir MD at Ottawa General Hospital within two weeks following, when blood samples from the twelve hosts were voluntarily sent to his lab to be tested. From the few blood tests that were done, Brahir was able to isolate the substance from the iron-bearing haemoglobin, noting that catabolic enzymes that affect proteins and nucleotides left the substance untouched. At the time, Brahir, as well as several chemists and nanotechnologists who found interest in the substance, were unable to accurately name Trinity according to traditional methods – its composition was so new to the field of science that related terminology was nonexistent. Its name, "Trinity", was chosen by the hosts themselves early in 2033 for this reason, based on how the substance causes three noticeable effects on exposed human beings – the enhancement of normal attributes, development of "specialist" abilities, and physical anthropomorphic hybridization.
Even though Trinity's capabilities were barely known by the time news of its existence spread outside of south-eastern Ontario, government officials from members of the G8 community had taken interest in possible military applications. Political tensions mounted between the United States and Canada in September 2033 when the hosts volunteered for military service in the Canadian Forces, only to be defused two years later when the hosts were internationally recognized by the UN as their own independent unit, christened Trinity Task Force 1. By then, the United States, China, and Russia had unsuccessfully attempted to extract the hosts for research on Trinity, later settling on attempting to artificially reproduce Trinity from stolen blood samples – research that now only conducted under UN sanction.
While trace amounts of Trinity can be found in every unfiltered substance that the host's body produces, it is most abundant in the bloodstream due to the presence of ferric organic compounds such as haemoglobin. Due to this affinity for iron, the only possible vectors for Trinity to reliably jump from one host to another are through blood transfusion and solute injection. With the implications associated with blood transfusion, recipients who are incompatible with the Trinity-saturated blood-type will simply reject the blood with no Trinity-based effect taking hold of them. Otherwise, the would-be host will encounter the following procedure:
- Injection: Trinity is injected directly into the recipient's bloodstream, either as a solution or as part of the donor's blood.
- Immuno-nervous Override: Trinity establishes nerve cells and the lymphatic system as its first targets for integration. The consequential temporary nerve inflammation to the still-conscious host marks this stage of the exposure as being the most painful.
- Psychochemoanalysis: Trinity analyzes the host's traits once it has reached the brain during the immuno-nervous override. In sentient hosts, this stage is when behavioural patterns mimicking those of the animal they will begin to resemble will emerge as temporary vocals and thoughts.
- Integration: Trinity assimilates itself into the rest of the host's body. Because of the immuno-nervous override, the host is only capable of sensing pressure at this point, and the immune system drastically increases the rate of assimilation. The host regains mental control at this point.
- Theri-Synchronization: (sentient hosts only) Trinity forces the host's body to adopt superficial features according to the animal they will resemble anthropomorphically. With the nervous system still overridden, the host does not feel any pain during this stage. When this stage is complete, the host regains the sense of touch. This stage is also when the host's conscious abilities are introduced.
The final stage often appears to contradict the laws of physics, chemistry and biology: the development of cellular mass without the host becoming exhausted or deprived of required nutrients, and the development of proteins that the host's DNA cannot produce naturally. It has been theorized that Trinity is capable of converting matter from one element to another, but no conclusive proof has been made as to whether this is true or not. However, Trinity has been proven to produce mRNA strands independently of DNA.
Because Trinity has the need to adapt and survive, the host is also forced to quickly adapt to accommodate to their new forms and abilities. New hosts require a minimum of two weeks to learn how to overcome and consciously control their new-found abilities less if the host is sufficiently trained in their specific focus.
Trinity's influence is capable of propagating beyond the host's body naturally through reproduction, and the process in which psychochemoanalysis works suggests that Trinity prefers newer generations of genetic material derived from the same species as the original host if such material is available. Therefore, a child-bearer who has not been exposed to Trinity before has a very slim chance of becoming a host, especially if the child has a different blood type.
The primary difference between recipient hosts and inherited hosts is in their capabilities. Compared to recipient hosts, inherited hosts display a high level of mastery over their own abilities as early as when they begin thinking coherently, and can voluntarily change their own physical shape completely or partially without any due side-effects, limited only by their genetics. Therefore, inherited hosts generally have two forms: Normal form, which is the appearance suggested by the host's genetics and past injuries; and Trinity form, the true appearance of the host. Depending on the host's affinities for a particular activity or aspiration, a host might also be able to exhibit a third form that of the animal they resemble. In a likewise manner, it is possible for a recipient host to acquire the ability for voluntary shapechanging between normal and Trinity forms. However, neither of the two latter methods is related to the shapechanging abilities of inherited hosts, despite having the same effect.
Through psychochemoanalysis, Trinity is capable of analyzing the host's physical and psychological behaviour. However, in tandem with the physical changes in sentient hosts, Trinity also affects psychological behaviour. If the host's immune system is well-built as in most cases, the subtle alteration in behaviour is not sufficient enough to interfere with or impair normal social interactions and intellectual processes and is therefore passed off as a series of personality quirks the possible symptoms can include altered eating habits, acquired mannerisms, and instinctual responses to certain external stimuli.
However, sickly recipient hosts, as well as recipient hosts who don't have sufficiently developed immune systems by the time they are exposed, suffer from more severe psychological and physical alterations. With an immune system that is overridden sooner than would normally be the case, Trinity forces its new host into a more intense psychochemoanalysis within the time period it takes for Trinity to override the nervous system. As a result, the host undergoes a more extensive transmutation, forgoing a comparable amount of their body shape. This is also reflected psychologically: advanced schizophrenia and split personality disorder are common amongst the sickliest or undeveloped hosts, with some individuals shifting between a human mindset and that of the animal the host resembled (in the most severe cases, the host shows no signs of remembering the shift to their alternate personality). Despite this, such hosts are still capable of socializing within the limits that their psychological diagnoses permit. Descended inherited hosts have a distinct possibility of exhibiting these same traits if the immunodeficiency is passed on genetically.
As a replicating nanotech substance, Trinity has the ability to consume and convert foreign objects for available energy and matter to both itself and its host, thereby enabling the host to survive in dire circumstances. However, this is limited to objects that are subject to the following criteria:
- The foreign object is fully immersed in a Trinity-saturated environment comprised of organic compounds;
- Not saturated with Trinity themselves; and
- Does not include traces of the host's DNA.
In this function Trinity can act as a stand-in for both leukocytes and digestive fluids, even though they are still produced out of evolutionary necessity. For inorganic objects, Trinity first engulfs the object before "dissolving" it into an energy-matter state that can be allocated for healing and Trinity production, simultaneously. However, only hosts who have the ability to regenerate, whether through a Trinity-granted ability or by natural means, are capable of quickly recovering from injuries that don't involve embedded objects.
Trinity's subsequent occurrence on Earth has sparked the creation of many conspiracy theories which, among others, include adaptations of David Icke's Reptilian conspiracy theory, conspiracies involving new world orders or secret organizations, and various internet memes involving furries. Many proponents of these theories, particularly of the Reptilian branch, are becoming increasingly proactive, and the rise in conspiracy-driven fanaticism, particularly militant off-shoots, is a growing area of concern for the international community.
In addition, several interest groups, from recreational hobbyists to international corporations, have sought to obtain Trinity samples for their own purposes – an issue which TTF1 and the UN does not want to see grow beyond research. Because Trinity is relatively unknown to modern science, and its programming difficult to decipher, it has become imperative that any and all research conducted on the nanotech substance be conducted under international jurisdiction with safety and security precautions put in place.
